Overview Custodian role at Hillsborough County Public Schools. The Custodian will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities. Responsibilities Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and burnishes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets; cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restrooms; cleans and dusts surfaces; removes and disposes of waste daily; maintains clean custodial closets. Performs minor non cleaning maintenance tasks of facility, including but not limited to changing light bulbs, changing toilet seats, unclogging toilets, changing ceiling tiles, touching up paint, securing window(s), delivering supplies, setting up for facility activities/meetings, and assembling/moving furniture. Follows a lawn and facility maintenance program, including mowing, weeding, weed-eating, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal, as appropriate. Opens or closes and secures facility, including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems. Turns on/off all lights, making sure that grounds and facility are free of debris and hazards. Responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter. Performs work duties independently and/or as part of a custodial crew depending upon the nature of the task; works cooperatively in group situations, exhibits tact and consideration, displays positive outlook and pleasant manner, offers assistance and support to co-workers, and works actively to resolve conflicts. Assumes modified duties and responsibilities of the Head Custodian or Custodial Crew Leader in the event of absence or vacancy. Possesses basic working knowledge of the English language. Performs any other duties as assigned. Qualifications Experience: One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in large scale housekeeping, custodial, or building and grounds maintenance. Language Skills: Reads and comprehends simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Writes simple correspondence. Effectively presents information in one-on-one and small group situations. Must possess basic comprehensive skills of the working English language. Mathematical Skills: Add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Reasoning Ability: Applies common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions. Deals with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables. Computer Skills: Internal HCPS email system and HCPS district website as appropriate. Physical Demands: Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling, handling, keyboarding, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, tasting/smelling, near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision. Other Information Attendance and Punctuality: Schedule time off in advance; arrive on time; ensure coverage when absent. Safety and Security: Follow safety procedures; report unsafe conditions; use equipment properly. Teamwork: Contribute to a positive team environment; communicate effectively; support colleagues.
